Nelson J. Schaefer

Nelson J. Schaefer, age 86 of Linn, Mo passed away Friday April 17, 2009 at the Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.

He was born March 29, 1923 in Linn to the late Peter and Catherine (Samson) Schaefer. Nelson attended school in Linn and was a World War II Navy Veteran. On September 27, 1947 he was united in marriage to Catherine E. Huesgen in Frankenstein. She survives of the family home. Nelson worked as a grassland cattle farmer and had worked for the Algoa Correction Facility as well as doing carpentry work.

Nelson enjoyed gardening, being around his cattle and spending time with his family. He was a member of St George Church, the Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Local 4756, the Missouri Cattleman's Association and the American Angus Association.

Dad had a kind, gentle, loving heart and spirit. His great loves were his wife and family. He could and did grow a blade of grass where none stood before. He loved to look across his alfalfa hay fields and watch them grow. He could cut a square corner of standing hay with his 8-N or Jubilee farm tractor and a sickle blade hay mower. His fences were straight and true. His garden was worked, potatoes laid-by and tomatoes staked. The Black Angus cow herd was his pride. He grieved the passing of family, neighbors and friends. He attended church on Sundays and Holy Days to the last. He was a model for living that will be sadly missed but always loved. He was told by his family that he is loved and thanked for all he did for them in life. We are so glad that we did!!

In addition to his wife Nelson is survived by three sons; Gale Schaefer, Gary and his wife Christine Schaefer and Gerard Schaefer all of Linn and one daughter; Kathy and her husband Bill Cartwright of Linn; one sister; Catherine Perrey of Jefferson City and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers; Paul Schaefer, George "Buck" Schaefer and Francis "Buddy" Schaefer and three sisters; Marie Heimericks, Clara Moore and Mildred Ann Schaefer.

Visitation will be from 4:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Morton Chapel in Linn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00am Thursday at the St George Church in Linn with Fr. I.C. Medina as the Celebrant. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum in Jefferson City.

Expression of sympathy may be made to the March of Dimes or to St. George Church.
