Merle D. Matthews, 88 of Mint Hill, Mo passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the University Hospital in Columbia.
He was born November 15, 1919 in Mint Hill to the late Honorable Judge Delbert and Nena (Laughlin) Matthews.
He attended school in Mint Hill and was a World War II Army Veteran having fought with the 9th Armored Tank Division. He worked for Standard Oil as a rigger before retiring in 1979.
On November 5, 1943 he was united in marriage to Mildred Hodge in Valparaiso, IN. She survives of the home.
Merle enjoyed farming and hunting. He was a member of the Chamois American Legion Post 0506.
Additional survivors include two sons, William R. and his wife Paula Matthews of Chamois and Terry D. Matthews of Mint Hill. One sister, Luetta and her husband Donald B. Hodge of Hobart, IN. Four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Merle Robert Matthews, and two brothers, Harold and Buell Matthews.
Visitation will be 4:00 pm-7:00 pm on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Morton Chapel in Linn.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday, September 5, 2008 at Morton Chapel. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at the Mint Hill Shirley Cemetery.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Mint Hill Shirley Cemetery Association.
