Margaret A. Schaefer, age 89, of Linn, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Westphalia Hills.

 

Margaret was born on February 28, 1934, in Loose Creek, a daughter to the late Charles and Mary (Backes) Haslag.

 

Margaret attended school in Loose Creek and was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Westphalia. 

 

On May 14, 1955, she was united in marriage to Herbert M. Schaefer at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek.  Herbert preceded her in death on December 6, 2007.

 

Margaret was employed for the State of Missouri in the Department of Social Services as a case worker before working in the cafeteria at St. George Parish School for thirty-four and a half years retiring in January of 2003.

 

Margaret was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Linn, St. Ann’s Sodality, and the Catholic Knights. 

 

Margaret enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, gardening, canning, going to the casino, cooking, and baking, playing cards, dominoes, bingo, and going on trips with her husband Herb.  Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family who was her pride and joy.

 

Margaret is survived by her five sons, Ronald “Ron” (Phyllis) Schaefer of Portland, Ralph (Carol) Schaefer of Loose Creek, Richard (Joan) Schaefer of Taos, Russell Schaefer (Kimberly Schubert) of Taos and Roderick “Rod” (Rosa) Schaefer of Linn; 7 grandchildren, Holly Schaefer, Jennifer (Jared) Cross, Laura Schaefer, Justin (Erin) Schaefer, Christy (Spencer) Burton, Emma Schaefer, and Gracie Schaefer; 5 step grandchildren, Elizabeth (William) Schmidt, Tom David, Tim David, Brad Wilson, and Lauren Wilson; 11 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

In addition to her parents and husband of 52 years, Margaret was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Anna (Ray) Niekamp, Frances (Albert) Niekamp, Angela (Bill) Eads, Sister Alice Haslag, O.S.S.R.; two brothers, Clarence (Esther) Haslag and infant Alfred Haslag; one daughter-in-law, Margie Schaefer; two brothers-in-law, Joe (Ida) Schafer, and Bill (Alice) Schaefer, and two sisters-in-law, Loretta (Ed) Coffman and Leona (Elmo) Bret.

 

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Morton Chapel in Linn.

 

An additional visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Colin Franklin as the Celebrant.  Interment will be in the St. George Parish Cemetery. 

 

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. George Parish Cemetery or for Masses.
