Joyce Diane Symmonds passed away Sunday April 6, 2025. Joyce had fought a long and courageous battle against the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. She died peacefully at home accompanied by her husband of 62 yrs, James Symmonds.
Joyce was born Dec 5, 1939, in Coffeyville, KS, a daughter to the late Harry and Lois (Brandes) Hopkins. She was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson City high school and earned bachelor’s and master's degrees in education from Lincoln University. Joyce taught several primary grades in her early career at Linn R-2 schools but spent the majority of her career teaching reading. It was not unusual for former students to approach Joyce and thank her for giving them the gift of reading and the joy of books.
Joyce was active in community affairs. She served two terms as a member of the board of the Osage County Historical Society. She was also active in the Osage County Players and one of the founding members of the Linn Women’s club. Joyce enjoyed hiking with her husband Jim in Colorado, gardening and was an animal lover.
In addition to her husband, Joyce is survived by a son, James “Jamie” (Martha) Symmonds of Holcomb, KS; a daughter Michelle (Todd) Morin of Carmel, IN; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and her brother Wayne Hopkins of San Diego along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her brother Dale Hopkins and sister, Sharon West.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for friends and family. The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice for the competence and concern they showed to Joyce. The family would also like to thank Sandy Mantle, Jenna Weiberg and Connie Fischer for the loving care they provided to her.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Osage County Historical Society or the children’s section of the Osage County Library.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mortan Chapel, Linn, MO.
