John Francis Berhorst, Sr.

John Francis Berhorst, Sr., age 86 of Linn, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at his residence.

John was born March 21, 1936, in Linn, a son to the late Leo and Clara (Otto) Berhorst.

On October 4, 1958, he was united in marriage to Georgia Viet in Folk.  She preceded him in death on June 21, 2001.

John began his working career at the Goff Grocery Store in Linn which later became Thriftway Grocery Store. He was promoted to Department Manager and worked over 60 years until his retirement. 

He was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Linn. 

John enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards including Texas Hold’em,

John is survived by: five sons, John Berhorst, Jr. and his wife Rosemary of Centertown, Gary Berhorst and his wife Dawn of Linn, Mike Berhorst of Linn, Mark Berhorst and his wife Angie of Linn, and Russell Berhorst and his wife Connie of Jefferson City; two daughters, Sharon Nilges and her husband Terry of Linn and Linda Stieferman and her husband Scott of Linn; three brothers, Robert Berhorst and his wife Judy of Russellville, Richard Berhorst of Linn, and Ronald Berhorst and his wife Brenda of Holts Summit; four sisters, Leona Mengwasser of Jefferson City, Mary Ann Mulpas and her husband Charles of Buckner, IL, Betty Gentges and her husband Steve of Linn, and Pat Knapheide of St. Martins; 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents and spouse of 42 years, he was preceded in death by: one grandson, Travis Coots; one sister, Leoba Mengwasser; and one brother, James Berhorst.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. George Catholic Church with his grandson, Fr. Brad Berhorst as the Celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. George Parish Cemetery.
