Annabell Catherine Schmutzler

Annabell Catherine Schmutzler, age 92, passed away Sunday August 4, 2024, at Riverview Nursing Home in Mokane. 

Annabell was born on July 5,1932, in St. Elizabeth, a daughter of Theodore G. and Catherine O. (Franken) Holtmeyer. She attended church and school at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

She married Herbert A. Berhorst and they made their home in Mary’s Home where they were members of Our Lady of Snows Parish.

She later married Joseph Schmutzler at St. Margaret Church in Osage Bend where they made their home for many years. She and Joe enjoyed working the parish picnics each year while living in the community. 

She began her work life by serving ice cream at Central Dairy. She was also a carhop at the original Tony’s Drive-In. She retired after a long employment in the housekeeping department at Memorial Community Hospital. 

Annabell attended the first “Red Hat Club” meeting held in Jefferson City and enjoyed her years of fellowship with the group. She was also a previous member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 5. Her love of the country was expressed by frequent displays of patriotism in her home and attire. She enjoyed visiting the casinos in St Charles where she played the penny slots with her sister-in-law, Norma Jean Holtmeyer. 

She is survived by her children, Mary Ann Walther, Betty Livingston, Dorothy Goodin, Robert Berhorst (Jeanine), Gloria Berhorst, Barbara Wallenmeyer-Jones and David Berhorst of Jefferson City and James Berhorst (Diane Biggs) of New Bloomfield and Allen Wallenmeyer of Belleview, Florida. She was “Grannie Annie” to 17 surviving grandchildren, Teresa Koecheritz, Dee Schubert, Donna Carpenter, Susan Young, Michelle Krueger, Mary Beth Kettle, Greg Beelek, Stefanie Tellman, Melanie Moore, Cole Berhorst, Robert Rook, Lisa Cook, Amandabelle Dawdy, Shane Berhorst, Melissa DeVign, Ben DeVign, and Jessica Berhorst; 21 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by all her siblings, Theodore Holtmeyer, Frederick Holtmeyer, Henrietta Schaeffer, Edward Holtmeyer, Richard Holtmeyer, Delores Darveaux, and Winfred Holtmeyer. 

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Rook, one grandson, William Moore and four sons-in-law, Adolph Walther, Alan Livingston, Benjamin Goodin and Robert Rook.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024, at St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church in Osage Bend with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor David Cox as the Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in St. Margaret of Antioch Parish Cemetery. 

Memorial donations may be made to the Cole County Senior Nutrition Program or St. Margaret Church.
