Alan D. Skouby, age 71 of Columbia, MO and a former area resident, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 26, 2009 after a recent illness diagnosed as ALS. At death he was surrounded by his family.
He was born Sept. 19, 1937 to Charles and Margaret (Cassel) Skouby in Bland, MO, both of whom held graduate degrees from the University of Missouri. Alan was the seventh child and sixth son. His childhood was spent in small towns in Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. He was a graduate of Belle High School class of 1954.
After four years at the University of Missouri, where he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi, he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1958. In 1969 he completed a Master of Economics degree at Stanford University.
His 40 year career as an engineer and economist was with Exxon, Monsanto, Cummins Engine and DeKalb Genetics. During those years he lived in many states and traveled the world.
In 1997 he began a second career as a teacher in the business school at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. After seven years there, he came to the Trulaske School of Business at the University of Missouri where he had just finished his fifth year of teaching. His joy in recent years was to interact with the students and faculty.
As recently as mid-June he taught in Bergamo, Italy where for the second year he was part of the MU Student's Abroad program.
He was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia.
Alan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Yvonne, of Columbia; a son, Mark Skouby and wife Kellee of Mentor, OH; a daughter, Nancy Skouby of Indianapolis, IN; three grandchildren: Megan, Andrew, and Katherine of Mentor and four brothers: Anton, Richard, Marion, and William Skouby.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Morton Chapel in Linn. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of service at 11:00am.
